Antique traditional Valencian water jug, known as a "colcho," made of natural cork with bronze and brass elements. It is complete with its two stoppers. It has not been restored or "made up," simply conserved and preserved so that its century of existence is reflected in its original state.
It retains an original patina on the metal, the result of time, which has not been polished, altered, or made up, and the signs of use are consistent with its age and use.
This piece stands out for the decorative simplicity typical of everyday objects, where functionality takes precedence over ornamentation. This cultural trait lends it its authentic character and ethnographic value today.
What makes this piece special is not only its age but also its deeply personal character: it bears a hand-engraved inscription on the metal rim with the date "1928" and some initials. The irregular calligraphy was probably made with a metal point as a symbol of permanence and belonging. This type of marking was common as a sign of ownership, imbuing the piece with a unique character and a direct connection to its former owner, transforming a utilitarian object into something intimate, linked to a specific history, functioning almost as a signature or tangible memento.
Furthermore, as you can see in the photographs, some of the rivets on the base have been replaced with antique screws, reflecting its prolonged use and adding authenticity to the piece.
This type of water jug is a very specific craft from the Sagunto area (Valencia) and its origin is linked to the rural world: farmers and farm workers needed durable containers that would keep water cool throughout the day.
Ideal for collectors, ethnography, rustic-industrial decor, or pieces with a history.
