Product description
Beautiful and particularly decorative Chinese object, hand-carved from multicolored soapstone. The stone displays beautiful natural shades ranging from grey-green to reddish-brown and almost black, which were deliberately incorporated into the carving by the maker.
The object is richly decorated with openwork rock and floral motifs and multiple hollowed-out sections. Such objects were traditionally used as brush washers/water vessels on the writing desk of a Chinese scholar and are now popular collector's and decorative items.
Dimensions: approx. 25 cm wide × 18 cm high.
Condition: vintage/antique condition with signs of age and use, and some minor damage to the fine carving; see the detailed photos.
Presumably first half of the 20th century, possibly older.
