Antique Joseph Lucas No. 133 "Calcia Club" Carbide Lamp - Large / Motorcycle Size (c. 1910-1914, Edwardian Period) - 100% Original
An extraordinary piece of British industrial archaeology: an original Joseph Lucas No. 133 "Calcia Club" carbide and acetylene gas lamp, manufactured in Birmingham, England, in the early 20th century during the late Edwardian period (c. 1910-1914).
This piece is the Large/Motorcycle Size variant, the most sought-after and rarest version in the range, originally designed with larger tanks for lightweight motorcycles of the era or touring bicycles.
An essential museum piece for collectors.
The piece is sold exclusively as a historical collectible or high-end decorative item. It is aesthetically complete and in magnificent exterior condition, free of modern restorations.
The heavy brass body exhibits an honest and unaltered industrial patina, where remnants of the original factory nickel plating remain. It retains all its authenticity markings deeply stamped into the metal, most notably the rampant lion with torch logo on the upper hood, the rear patents, and the safety inscription on the lower reservoir: "Made by Joseph Lucas Ltd. Birmingham - Do not fill carbide above this line."
The optics are in exceptional condition, maintaining the thick glass convex main lens (11 cm in diameter) and its two faceted green glass side-jewels intact.
The lantern is mechanically complete externally: the front hatch opens correctly, and the lower reservoir retains its original detachable configuration, preserving the internal reflector with genuine traces of period soot.
Due to its age of over a century, internal consumables (such as the felt filter or the thread gasket) would require replacement if it is to be operated with gas.
