Antique Brass Hindu Makeup Box
Late 19th Century Vintage.
This is an old Mughal-style Indian brass box
with peacock and elephant figures. It
has six compartments that lock by
screwing the central peacock. Ideally used for
storing colored powder makeup for
Hindu beauty rituals.
Handcrafted from solid brass by
artisans in Uttar Pradesh, India. This antique storage box has six heart-shaped containers
with hinged lids and
peacock-shaped finials, each of which opens and
closes independently. The main finial is a peacock, a sacred Indian bird. The
base has five elephant-shaped feet on which
the metal caddy rests. The peacock is considered
a divine symbol of pride and beauty.
