Beautiful and rare antique Anglo-Indian travel chest (also known as a Mandalay or Rangoon chest), dating from the late 19th century (circa 1880).
These chests were made during the British colonial Raj period in Burma (Myanmar) and India for wealthy travelers and officers, or used as precious bridal chests.
The exterior of the chest looks rugged and robust, but the real magic appears as soon as you open the lid. The interior features a beautiful, architectural design with finely hand-carved columns, Oriental arches, and an original central mirror.
The chest is crafted entirely from solid Burmese teak, which is known for its warm golden-brown color, beautiful grain, and extreme durability.
Condition
The chest is in beautiful, authentic condition with a stunning weathered patina that adds character to the piece of furniture.
Please note: One small wooden door/flap is missing from the inside of the compartment. Due to the rich details and extensive carving, this is hardly noticeable in daily use, but the asking price has naturally been adjusted accordingly. Otherwise, the woodwork is in good structural condition.
