Rightfully a true classic, the Anglepoise 1227 lamp designed by George Carwardine. This version was manufactured from 1938 to 1968 by Herbert Terry & Sons (Anglepoise).
The lamp is highly maneuverable and makes the perfect desk lamp. It is stylish in design and very stable due to its cast iron base. The desk lamp has a rotary switch at the top of the shade and features a bakelite plug. Above the base is the inscription 'Made in England by Herbert Terry & Sons Ltd Redditch' and on the back 'The Anglepoise Pat. in U.K. and abroad'. This assures you that this is an original. The lamp is in (very) nice condition considering its age.
George Carwardine (1887-1947) was an automotive designer and was working as a freelance design consultant when he invented the Anglepoise lamp. He specialized in suspension systems and applied for the patent on July 4, 1932 for a design of a lamp with a mechanism of joints and spring tension. This allowed the lamp to be moved in a wide range of positions without clamping.
He originally manufactured the lamp himself in the workshops of his own company (Cardine Accessories at Bath) but soon the demand became so great that he needed a partner. On February 22, 1934, he entered into a licensing agreement with Herbert Terry and Sons (Redditch) who henceforth took charge of production and marketing.
The lamp is in (very) nice condition considering its age.
