- Andy Warhol, born Andrew Warhola on August 6, 1928 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and died on February 22, 1987, was an American visual artist, film director and producer. He was a leading figure in the Pop Art movement and is considered one of the most important American artists of the second half of the 20th century. His works explored the relationship between artistic expression, advertising and celebrity culture that flourished in the 1960s.
Warhol's art was a major shift away from abstract expressionism, focusing instead on images and techniques from popular culture. He used a technique that simulated benday screening (a dot pattern used by engravers), outlining areas of primary colors with thick black lines. His work was both a critique and a celebration of popular culture, and he often used irony and parody in his pieces.
Warhol's artworks have been auctioned several times, with prices ranging up to $195,040,000, depending on the size and medium of the artwork. The highest price ever paid for a Warhol painting was for "Shot Sage Blue Marilyn," which sold for a staggering 195,040,000 USD at a famous auction house in 2022.
One of Warhol's most iconic series is the Marilyn Monroe portfolio, a series of ten 36×36-inch silkscreen prints on paper, first created in 1967. All the prints show the same image of 1950s movie star Marilyn Monroe, but all in different, usually very bright, colors. They were made five years after her death in 1962. The original image was taken by Warhol from a promotional still by Gene Kornman for Monroe's film Niagara (1953). This series of prints emphasized Warhol's fascination with celebrity culture and the concept of fame.
