Andrea Branzi – Set of 4 "Revers" Chairs for Cassina
This set of chairs was designed by Andrea Branzi (1938–2023), one of the most influential figures in post-war Italian design.
Branzi was an architect, furniture designer, theorist, and professor at the Politecnico di Milano, and played a key role in the development of Radical Design in the 1960s as co-founder of Archizoom Associati. His work is characterized by a critical and conceptual approach to design, in which objects are not only functional but also carry cultural and intellectual significance.
In addition to his academic and theoretical contributions, Branzi designed furniture for leading international manufacturers, including Cassina, an iconic Italian brand known for its collaborations with influential architects and its high-quality production standards. The collaboration between Branzi and Cassina resulted in designs that combine experimental design with industrial precision.
The Revers chair, designed in the early 1990s, is a striking example of Branzi’s design philosophy. The design is characterized by the combination of a slender metal frame with a flowing wooden back and armrest, executed as a single, continuous element. This materiality creates a tension between industrial rationality and artisanal warmth. The chair is both sculptural and functional, representing the high-quality, intellectually charged design that Cassina and Branzi jointly represent.
Today, the Revers chairs are beloved by design collectors and are considered representative examples of Italian design from late 20th-century modernism.
The chairs have a light patina and signs of wear (see photos), but the entire set is in excellent vintage condition.
