His years at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, from 1958 to 1966, were marked, as were his works, by the teaching of Jean Aujame (1905–1965) and, more particularly, by Roger Limouse (1894–1989), the leading figure of the "Painters of Poetic Reality" group. From this major movement in French painting from the 1930s to the 1960s, which claimed the legacy of Fauvism, Castelin retained vibrant colors and a clear interaction between the background and the main subject of the canvas. Critics praised the warmth and strength of his colors, the stark simplicity of his forms, and his dedication to themes dear to him: female muses, illusionists, acrobats, and magicians elevated to an imaginary and dreamlike dimension. Maintaining his independence and originality, Castelin drew from a classical repertoire, which he shaped with his own sensibility. Each of his figures is inscribed in its own spatial dimension and expresses the desire to communicate sensations for each reality. Through his masterful compositions and his brushstrokes, sometimes powerful, sometimes delicate, the viewer enters his intimate universe where love, circus, and magic intertwine according to a precise dramatic structure.
