F. Albini:
Franco Albini, born in Robbiate (Como) in 1905, is one of the leading figures of the rationalist movement in the fields of architectural design, furniture, industrial design, and museum design.
After graduating as an architect from the Politecnico di Milano in 1929, he collaborated with the firms of Ponti and Lancia. His contributions to the magazine Casabella also played a fundamental role in the development of his thinking, marking his definitive conversion to rationalism, of which he became a leading advocate in the Italian cultural landscape. When he opened his first professional practice in Milan in 1931, he began working on social housing projects and continued in this field after the war, thanks to the opportunities offered by reconstruction, collaborating with Franca Helg from 1952 onward.
During the 1940s, Albini expanded his collaboration with Cassina, a company for which he designed several chairs, already precursors to his stylistic approach. He continued this work with other companies in the sector, such as Poggi. Milan and Genoa represent the geographical area where Albini left his strongest mark.
For the Lombard capital, he designed the layout of the stations for metro line 1 (1962/63), in collaboration with graphic designer Bob Noorda, and for the Ligurian city, he carried out numerous urban planning and building projects, including the Palazzo Bianco (1949/51), Palazzo Rosso (1952/62), and Tesoro di San Lorenzo (1952/56) museums. Franco Albini received various awards in recognition of the importance of his cultural influence.
He is, among other things, a member of the INU, CIAM, the Accademia Ligustica di Genova, the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, the ADI, the Accademico di S. Luca, the Fondazione Pagano, and the Royal Society of Arts in London.
He has also received numerous awards, including the La Rinascente - Compasso d'Oro for the design of the Luisa chair (1955), the bronze medal from Parsons School of Design in New York for his contribution to industrial design (1956), the Olivetti Prize for Architecture (1957), the La Rinascente - Compasso d'Oro Grand Prix National (1958), the La Rinascente - Compasso d'Oro Prize for the design of Line 1 of the Milan Metro (1964), and the title of Royal Designer for Industry, conferred by the Royal Society of Arts in London (1971).
Throughout his entire body of work, from domestic spaces to industrial design pieces, not forgetting museum installations, Franco Albini consistently maintains a logical coherence, a high degree of purity of expression, and a profound ethical and historical integrity.
Between architecture and design, Franco Albini's work represents the keystone of early 20th-century Italian architectural culture, thanks to an intense activity focused on creativity and rigorous composition and construction that express exceptionally high aesthetic standards.
