For sale is a beautiful, small dish/business card holder/dish/ashtray/ashtray by Alfred Schäfter, circa 1930. It is made of hand-hammered brass with raised edges at each of the four corners. It is marked with the workshop mark "AS" and "Handarbeit" (handmade). Dimensions: approximately 2 cm high, 10 cm in diameter.
Alfred Schäfter was a German metal sculptor, goldsmith, and silversmith. After training as a silversmith with K. Berthold in Frankfurt am Main and studying at the Burg Giebichenstein School of Applied Arts in Halle an der Saale, he was appointed master craftsman at the Bauhaus in 1927, a position he held until 1932. His work is characterized by a simple, timeless elegance and is represented in numerous museums and collections worldwide.
The item is in age-appropriate condition, with signs of age and use (scratches, abrasions, some minor residue, and oxidation).
