Albert Kiessling Studio Ceramic Vase Duo – “Schlangenhaut” and Craquelé Glazes – East German Studio Ceramics, Germany, 1950s–1970s
A compelling curated duo of original studio ceramic vases by Albert Kiessling, showcasing two of the East German master ceramist's most distinctive surface treatments. Though differing in colour, scale, and texture, both pieces reveal Kiessling's lifelong fascination with glaze chemistry, organic pattern formation, and the transformation of ceramic surfaces into sculptural landscapes.
Albert Kiessling, active from the 1950s onward and based in Langenhessen, developed a highly recognisable artistic language within East German studio ceramics. His works are celebrated for their experimental glazes, tactile surfaces, and unique balance between craftsmanship and artistic exploration. Today, his most ambitious pieces are increasingly sought after by collectors of GDR ceramics and post-war European studio pottery.
THE VASES
Blue & white “Schlangenhaut” Vase (Taller)
• Height: approx. 33 cm
• Diameter: approx. 13.5 cm
• Opening: approx. 9 cm
A striking cylindrical vase covered in Kiessling's celebrated “Schlangenhaut” (snakeskin) glaze. The surface consists of hundreds of raised cellular formations in pale blue and ivory-white, creating a rich tactile texture reminiscent of reptilian skin, coral formations, or microscopic organic structures. The effect changes dramatically under shifting light, revealing an almost geological complexity. The dark blue neck provides a visual counterpoint to the highly textured body.
Grey-Beige-Brown Craquelé Vase (Smaller)
• Height: approx. 25 cm
This elegant companion piece features a finely developed craquelé glaze in soft ivory-grey tones. The entire surface is covered by a dense network of crackle patterns, creating an appearance reminiscent of dried earth, weathered stone, or antique porcelain. Around the neck, the crackle pattern elongates into vertical cellular structures, adding a subtle architectural rhythm to the otherwise rounded form. The darker rim and exposed stoneware body emphasise the handcrafted character of the piece.
DIALOGUE BETWEEN THE TWO
Although produced as independent works, the two vases create a remarkably harmonious pairing. Both explore the tension between control and spontaneity in ceramic firing, yet they arrive at very different visual results. The taller blue vase appears exuberant and volcanic, while the smaller grey example feels quieter and more archaeological.
Together they demonstrate the breadth of Kiessling's experimentation and his ability to create highly individual objects united by a shared organic sensibility.
