Product description
Albert Kiessling Lava Glaze Ceramic Bottle Vase – Handcrafted Studio Pottery, Germany, 1960s–1970s A highly distinctive studio ceramic vase by German ceramic artist Albert Kiessling, showcasing the dramatic volcanic glaze effects that made his work instantly recognizable among collectors of post-war German ceramics. Handcrafted and marked “Handarbeit,” this piece combines sculptural simplicity with an extraordinarily expressive surface treatment. The form itself is deliberately restrained: a compact globular body rising into a narrow cylindrical neck, recalling ancient bottle vessels while maintaining a distinctly modern presence. This reduction of form allows the surface to become the primary protagonist. The glaze is exceptional. An intense cobalt blue—reminiscent of the celebrated International Klein Blue—covers the entire vessel, interrupted by hundreds of crater-like formations that create a richly textured lava landscape. White and charcoal-grey inclusions emerge from the glaze like mineral deposits or coral formations, giving the surface a striking organic character. The result is almost geological, evoking volcanic rock, deep-sea organisms, or microscopic cellular structures. Kiessling became particularly known for these experimental lava glazes, which transformed functional ceramics into tactile sculptural objects. Each firing produced unique variations, making every example effectively one of a kind. The contrast between the vivid blue glaze and the rough cratered texture creates an unusually dynamic visual effect, changing dramatically under different lighting conditions. At only 16 cm in height, the vase possesses remarkable visual weight and presence. It works equally well as a standalone sculptural object or as part of a curated collection of German studio ceramics, Fat Lava pottery, or contemporary ceramic art.
