Product description
Striking studio pottery vase duo produced in the workshop of Albert Kiessling in Langenhessen, Saxony, during the 1960s–1970s. Both vases display sculptural silhouettes characteristic of East German studio ceramics of the mid-20th century. Their forms combine a flared base with a narrowed waist that transitions into a gently expanding neck, creating an elegant and architectural profile. The surfaces are defined by expressive glaze textures. The vessels feature dramatic crater- or lava-like glaze structures, producing a richly tactile surface that highlights the experimental glaze chemistry typical of studio pottery workshops in the GDR (DDR). Such textures—often referred to as crater or snakeskin glazes—became a recognizable aesthetic feature of many East German ceramics of the period. Displayed together, the two vessels form a harmonious sculptural pair, demonstrating variations of scale within the same form language and glaze tradition. Artist Albert Kiessling was a master potter working in Langenhessen, Saxony, and a significant representative of regional studio ceramics in East Germany. His workshop became known for hand-thrown vessels with expressive glaze surfaces, often exploring lava and crater glaze techniques that produced highly textured ceramic surfaces. After his death, the ceramic tradition in Langenhessen continued through the next generation. His daughter Gudrun Unterstab later founded Kunsttöpferei Unterstab together with her husband Ralf Unterstab in the early 1960s. Works from this regional pottery tradition are today appreciated by collectors of DDR studio ceramics and mid-century European pottery.
