A rare and large-format Akari J1 pendant lamp by Isamu Noguchi, manufactured by Ozeki in Japan. This early example dates from the 1970s and bears the coveted original manufacturer's mark of a red sun and crescent moon, a hallmark of early productions of the legendary Akari series.
The sculptural pendant lamp is made of handmade washi paper, bamboo, and a delicate metal frame. Its striking, vertically elongated form gives it an almost floating presence, making it an impressive object whether illuminated or switched off. The light filtered through the traditional washi paper creates a warm, soft atmosphere and underscores Noguchi's concept of light not merely as illumination, but as a design element of the living space.
Emerging from Noguchi's collaboration with lantern artisans in the Japanese city of Gifu, the Akari lamps combine traditional craftsmanship with a modern design language. To this day, they are considered among the most important lighting objects of the 20th century and are represented in numerous international design collections.
Condition: Very good vintage condition. Early production from old stock with original box. The washi paper shows only minor signs of age and is in excellent condition overall.
