The Earth Keeps Count is an abstract work inspired by the repeated lines of wheat and grain that shape cultivated landscapes. Rows of individual marks stretch across the canvas, recalling crops planted, tended and harvested season after season. From a distance they form an ordered rhythm; up close, each is irregular and distinct; a record of repetition. The work considers our relationship with the land and the increasingly fine line between cultivation and extraction. We measure the earth by what it produces: its yield, its abundance, its ability to provide. Yet beneath that expectation is a landscape that carries the imprint of every season and everything asked of it. Here, each mark becomes both a stalk and a tally; something grown, something taken.
