This is a remarkable reverse glass painting from South India, dating from around 1900. The artwork depicts Murugan, an important Hindu deity, and is a beautiful example of the traditional Tanjore (Thanjavur) painting style, known for its rich colors and detailed finish.
The work was created using the reverse glass painting technique, in which the image is applied in reverse order to the back of a glass plate. The composition shows Murugan with his characteristic attributes, including the peacock, against a background featuring a temple structure. The colors are vibrant, with gold-colored accents that emphasize the divine status of the figure. The whole is set in a wooden frame with decorative woodcarving. The dimensions of the framed work are 54 cm in width and 70 cm in height.
The painting is in good condition, befitting its age of more than a century. The work has retained its original character and patina, which contributes to the historical value of the object.
