A pair of large hand-forged hearth irons or firebacks. Age not known, estimated 17th century from France.
The wrought iron forstocks have been burned in with linseed oil. This gives some protection against rusting and a beautiful appearance. The bowls at the top of the braziers are for keeping a bowl of soup warm, for example.
