After studying graphic art and painting at the Hasselt Art Academy, Katrien Caymax spent extended periods abroad. She refined and nourished her art with external influences. She spent two years in Morocco. In Spain, she became acquainted with Andalusian culture. She spent several years in a remote mountain village in Asturias (northwestern Spain). She worked in Switzerland, where her publisher, Schindler, ensured further distribution of her work in Germany and Austria. She opened a studio in Brussels. In 1980, she learned the technique of aquatint at the University of Belgrade, the foundation of color graphics. During that period, color inspired her to paint again (pastel). For a long time, she had a studio in Vorselaar (Antwerp).
