Gispen ‘TU Delft’ 106 Stacking Chairs in Pagholz, Netherlands, 1950s
Beautiful group of original Gispen 106 “TU Delft” school chairs, designed by W.H. Gispen in the early 1950s for the Technical University in Delft.
The chairs combine a sculptural industrial frame with warm, architectural plywood shells:
• Frame – textured grey / hamerslag tubular steel with the characteristic continuous top rail that rises above the backrest and acts as a handle.
• Seat & back – molded Pagholz plywood in a deep mahogany-red tone with a beautiful visible grain. The shells are stamped “PAG” with production code underneath, confirming the original Pagholz manufacture.
• Details – black rubber “high sock” feet, stackable construction, and exposed screw fixings that emphasize the honest, utilitarian character of the design.
These chairs were developed as robust university seating, but today they work perfectly around a dining table, in a studio, café or creative office. The combination of the warm red-brown plywood and the softly worn industrial frame gives them a very desirable vintage look.
Condition
Overall very good vintage condition. The Pagholz shells show a rich gloss with light surface marks, small scratches and minor edge wear in places; the frames have age-appropriate patina, small chips to the hammer-finish paint and traces of use. Rubber feet complete and functional. Structurally solid and ready for daily use.
