Japanese porcelain from the 1970s possesses a particular elegance. Its forms are simple, almost geometric, but its decorations are remarkably delicate. The pale pink grid that runs across the belly of these bowls is not a mere background pattern. It creates depth, a structure upon which the flowers seem to rest. These five fine porcelain bowls feature a morning glory decoration, this Japanese bindweed with trumpet-shaped flowers that wind around delicate stems. The flowers are blue and pink, the leaves a soft green, and each bowl carries its own variation on the same floral theme. The shape is round, flattened, resting on a small foot rim. The interior is immaculate white. This type of tea or rice bowl was produced in Japan for export and for the domestic market in the 1970s-1980s.
