Product description
The Sarreguemines factory, founded in Moselle in 1790 and managed in the 19th century by Utzschneider & Compagnie, is one of the great names in French earthenware. In the second half of the 19th century, it produced high-quality series of polychrome printed tableware, including the famous regionalist series that accurately document the costumes, customs, and landscapes of rural France. These 4 plates belong to the series dedicated to scenes from Brittany. Each piece depicts a captioned scene from life, with ethnographic precision remarkable for the period. The four subjects depicted are: "The Conscripts. Finistère," a group of young conscripts marching with a bugle and flag. "The Engaged Couple. Douarnenez," a couple in traditional Breton costume. "Smoker and Smokeress. Landivisiau," a couple exchanging a pipe in a landscape. "Grape Harvest in Brittany," a harvesting scene under apple trees. The decoration is created by polychrome underglaze printing, a technique mastered by Sarreguemines as early as the 1860s-1870s. The finely engraved central scenes are framed by an identical border on all four pieces: a frieze of stylized oak leaves in cobalt blue, golden ochre, and pink, with alternating triangular points on an ivory background. The mark on the reverse, in black cursive script with the U&C monogram, confirms the production period. Diameter: 20 cm. Three plates are in very good condition. The fourth plate ("Grape Harvest in Brittany") has an old chip on the rim, clearly visible in the photographs. This chip, evidently very old, testifies to the age of the piece and does not impair the legibility of the decoration. These Sarreguemines regionalist series are now sought after by collectors of antique earthenware and enthusiasts of Breton artifacts. They constitute a valuable iconographic testament to late 19th-century Brittany, captured on opaque porcelain with the care and technical mastery characteristic of the great Moselle factory. Additional details: - Brand: Sarreguemines - Style: Régionaliste - Style: Breton - Material: Faïence - Colour: Polychrome - Colour: Bleu cobalt - Colour: Ocre doré - Colour: Ivoire - Period: fin XIXe siècle
