Design: Gerrit Th. Rietveld, 1922-1925
The 3-tube 'Hartog' pendant lamp is Rietveld's most famous lamp design and a fine example of work that can be considered part of the Dutch aesthetic movement 'De Stijl'. Its open structure and intersecting lamps create a spatial composition that we also see in Rietveld's 'slatted furniture' of which the 'Red-Blue' chair is the most famous example. It is a typical Rietveld design in which space is indicated but not enclosed. The lamp is named after Doctor Hartog a client of Rietveld for whom he made the first version of this design in 1922, a version with two vertical tubes.
Hardly any signs of use can be seen.
