Pair of pottery bowls, La Chambra, Colombia, circa 1970. These pottery bowls with rounded bottoms are handcrafted in Colombia by members of the Pijao indigenous people. Suitable for oven or stovetop firing. The clay retains heat, allowing for slow and even firing.
Once the bowl is molded into its desired shape, it is sun-dried for over a month before being polished with semi-precious stones and then placed in a kiln at approximately 850°C. Next comes the endemic smoking process, which uses a combination of dried local spices. This final step gives La Chambra black pottery its iconic black color.
