Cornelis Eduard Antheunis (1876-1943) founded the Art Pottery Factory named after him in 1910. It was the second company in Gouda that made decorative pottery.
Initially, the warm red ground was characteristic of Antheunis' pottery, the result of the use of red-baking clay. The decorations were usually abstract and provided with a beautiful, glossy glaze. After the First World War, Antheunis started using white baking clay and therefore lost its distinctive character. At the time of the economic crisis around 1929, Antheunis applied spray glaze and started producing cold-lacquer pottery. Antheunis had to close its doors in 1933.
