A pair of genuine CAB side chairs by Mario Bellini for Cassina.
The CAB is a genuinely radical object: sixteen hand-cut pieces of saddle leather, stitched and zipped over a tubular steel skeleton (see the similarity with the human body?) — no glue, no bolts, just leather and structure. Bellini conceived it as a skin over a body, and after nearly five decades it remains in continuous production.
This pair dates from the 1990s. The leather has developed a deep, moody patina — a muted greenish-grey. Scuffs, softening and surface cracking give the hides a worn, almost industrial character. These chairs came of age in full grunge era and they dress accordingly. Structurally they are excellent: frames solid, zips intact, no wobble. We did replace the gliders with new, high quality teflon ones.
For a buyer who wants the real thing with genuine history on it, these are far more interesting than a pristine example. The leather cover zips off entirely, so professional re-leathering is straightforward if you ever want a refresh — but many won't.
Condition: Structurally excellent. Leather shows significant wear — scuffs, surface cracking, faded patina. Sold as-is.
Authentication: Stamped H 3 Cassina on underside.
Dimensions: 80 × 47 × 40 cm, seat height 45 cm.
Price is for the pair.
