This is a rare, over 2,000-year-old stone-carved sculpture, approximately 14 cm in height, depicting two female figures, likely Yakṣīs (also known as Yakṣiṇīs). Yakṣiṇīs are a class of nature spirits, both male and female, found in various Indian religious mythologies. They are among the many supernatural beings featured in the traditional legends of India.
The style of the figures suggests a creation date between the 4th and 1st century BC, potentially from the Maurya period (322 to 185 BC) or the Shunga period (187 to 73 BC), as seen in sculptures from the Mathura region of India. Such sculptures were typically made in terracotta, but they were also occasionally carved from stone, as this example demonstrates.
