Bastiano armchairs by Tobia Scarpa - Gavina
An icon of Italian design in the 1960s, the Bastiano armchair embodies the sober elegance and structural intelligence characteristic of Tobia Scarpa's work. Designed in 1962 for Gavina, this model marks a turning point in the history of modern furniture: it combines an architectural structure in solid wood with generous cushions, for comfort and a resolutely contemporary line.
The version offered here features deep, richly grained rosewood, perfectly enhanced by a new sandy aniline leather upholstery. The leather, selected for its full-grain quality, has been refurbished in keeping with the original model.
Tobia Scarpa, trained in Venice and a long-time collaborator of his father Carlo Scarpa, is renowned for his rational yet sensual approach to design. With Bastiano, he explores a simple yet powerful idea: accessible, modular furniture, without ever abandoning the sophistication of materials.
Originally distributed by Gavina, then reissued by Knoll after the company's acquisition in the 1960s, Bastiano remains an iconic piece, at the crossroads of Italian craftsmanship and modernism.
