The Vitra Organic Chair was designed by Charles Eames and Eero Saarinen. The design of this comfortable reading chair dates back to 1940, when Charles Eames and Eero Saarinen submitted several variations of the Organic Chair to a design competition launched by the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Although this competition was all about organic design, the round shapes of the Organic Conference Dining Chair were ahead of their time. In fact, it was not yet possible to produce the chair on a large scale in 1940. It wasn't until 1950 that organically shaped seat shells, like those of the Eames Plastic Chair and the Organic Chair managed to be mass-produced. Inside, the chair is constructed of a laminated seat topped with a layer of polyurethane foam. The chair is reupholstered in a faux sheepskin furniture fabric which gives a nice playful effect, in keeping with Eames' thinking. The chair is 73 centimeters wide, 83 centimeters high and 68 centimeters deep. The seat height is 36 centimeters.
Good vintage condition. The chairs have been reupholstered once
