Two swans, hand-engraved in brass with a red enamel lacquer and engraved patterns.
The triangular and fan-like patterns are characteristic of traditional Indian "etched brass" or "Benares ware" (also known as Mooradabad brasswork, named after the city of Moradabad in Northern India).
The red background is achieved with a colored lacquer or enamel, after which the metal is hand-carved and polished to allow the gold-colored brass to shine through.
The technique is quite labor-intensive—each tiny line is applied with a chisel or fine knife, not cast or pressed.
Origin: Most likely from India, the Uttar Pradesh region (Moradabad), where this type of craft has been produced for decades, particularly popular between the 1960s and 1990s, when Indian crafts were exported to Europe as decorative items.
Intended as a decorative pair (swans symbolize love and fidelity in India).
This is certainly not a simple, mass-produced cast metal product with a printed design, but truly handcrafted. The swans are heavy but hollow inside.
The swans look like new.
Dimensions of Swans 1 and 2:
