In the Alsatian village of Betschdorf, the tradition of salt-glazed stoneware has been passed down from generation to generation since the 18th century. These two beer mugs bear the stamp of the Remmy Fils pottery on the bottom, one of the village's historic pottery dynasties, whose productions are sought after today by regional ceramics enthusiasts. Of a straight cylindrical shape with a slight flare and a flattened ribbon handle, they illustrate the characteristic simplicity of Alsatian utilitarian stoneware. One features the natural beige-gray hue of salt-glazed stoneware, the other a gray-blue obtained by adding cobalt to the glaze. This slight variation in shade, due to the vagaries of salt firing, is the very signature of pottery craftsmanship. Height approximately 12 cm. In very good condition. Stoneware intact, with a granular and shiny surface characteristic of salt firing. Sold as a pair.
