On the Escalator in a Paris Department Store, 1956
30.5 cm x 30.5 cm square print with a white border.
This is a late work by photographer Willem van der Poll. He spent his entire career shooting photo reports for renowned Dutch and international magazines, such as the renowned Berliner Illustrierte Zeitung. He preferred capturing atmospheric impressions of places that were still unknown to the general public at the time. He had already been shooting fashion reports for Vogue magazine in the 1930s. For this Berlin shoot, he returned to Paris many years later, and his mastery of light and space still shines through. It feels as if you were right there in the heart of the Saint-Germain-des-Prés district.
