Ramses Shaffy (1933–2009), singer, chansonnier, and actor, photographed aboard the passenger ship Nieuw Amsterdam. Shaffy is wearing a life jacket and holding a cigarette—a seemingly casual pose that perfectly captures his characteristic blend of nonchalance and intensity.
The image was taken during a voyage on which the cabaret group Shaffy Chantant was sailing. The company performed every evening on board, making this photo not only a portrait but also a document of a significant moment in Dutch theater and music history.
A rare and personal image of one of the Netherlands' most iconic artists, captured in the mid-1960s—a period when Shaffy became a cultural figurehead.
