For sale is a completely restored Thonet B35 armchair in the original Marcel Breuer special edition with leather tension straps on the underside, in stunning condition.
Two chairs are available.
ITEM:
1x Thonet B35 cantilever armchair (now called S35L in a different version)
Finish: Full-grain leather with five leather tension straps on the underside, beech armrests stained and lacquered
STYLE:
Bauhaus
DESCRIPTION: With its lightness, flexibility, and comfort, this armchair surpasses all heavy and cumbersome cantilever chairs of the Bauhaus era. In the 1930s, the modern lifestyle conveyed by the B35 seemed visionary; today, it is an integral part of our mobile and individual lifestyles. The leather upholstery and solid wood armrests are as striking today as they were then. With the B35, Marcel Breuer succeeded in designing all the functions of a cantilevered tubular steel chair in a single, continuous line that also incorporates the armrests. Breuer's design achieved a double cantilever effect: the seat and armrests flex independently. The rocking motion of the cantilevered seat and backrest is balanced by the springy armrests.
This comfortable club chair was first exhibited in 1930 during the now-famous presentation of the Deutscher Werkbund at the Salon des Artistes Décorateurs in Paris. There, it was part of the furnishings of a prototypical high-rise apartment that Breuer designed together with Walter Gropius and Herbert Bayer.

CONDITION:
Stunning! The armchair is in impeccable and unique condition, both technically and visually. It has been meticulously and completely restored by a professional restorer. The leather has been re-treated, recolored, sealed, and conditioned. It is free of stains, scratches, and holes and is completely odorless. Apart from the typical creases of full-grain leather upholstery, it looks brand new. The webbing is not stretched and has no tears. The armrests are, of course, scratch-free and like new. The beautiful chrome frame is also in excellent condition, with no blemishes or rust damage.
It will be extremely difficult to find a better example of this condition; it is likely the best currently available on the vintage market. We have not found a single Thonet B35 advertised in Europe that even comes close to this condition!

LIST PRICE / COMPARISON PRICE:
This special edition armchair with adjustable leather straps is no longer available new!
Currently, this armchair is only available in the simplified and significantly less expensive S35L version with a central steel tube tension bar (not the original design by Marcel Breuer!). This more affordable version in full-grain leather currently costs €3,177 from Thonet, and is available from retailers starting at €2,700.
For context: Thonet offers the option of commissioning a replacement cover for the model with leather straps. This replacement cover costs €2,502 in full-grain leather, including VAT – almost as much as a complete armchair in the simplified S35L version!

Cost-effective non-EU transport via freight forwarder in a special wooden crate may also be possible.
