Impressive 19th-century Gothic Revival religious artwork depicting God the Father, after the upper central panel of the Ghent Altarpiece / Adoration of the Mystic Lamb by the Van Eyck brothers.
The image is set in a highly decorative gilt architectural frame with Gothic columns, capitals and pointed ornament, giving the piece a strong sculptural and decorative presence.
The reverse bears an old “Winsor & Newton – London” stencil as well as handwritten Latin inscriptions corresponding to those associated with the throne of God the Father in the original Van Eyck composition:
Vita sine morte in capite
Iuventus sine senectute in fronte
Gaudium sine moerore a dextris
Securitas sine timore a sinistris
The image appears to be an early printed or chromolithographic reproduction, probably dating from circa 1860–1880.
