Designed in the late 1960s by the maestro Alessandro Mendini and manufactured by the historic Italian glassworks Fidenza Vetraria, this luminary object is a phenomenal study in contrasting volumes. The structural brilliance lies in its optical illusion: the lamp is composed of two massive, heavy molded-glass halves that perfectly interlock. Together, they form a rigid, substantial cube on the exterior, while the negative space carved into the center reveals a flawless, hollow sphere.
This specific piece is an incredibly rare First Series edition, distinguished by its internal satin/frosted glass finish on the inner sphere. While later iterations opted for fully clear compartments, this first series is widely celebrated by collectors as the most elegant and visually striking version. When illuminated, the frosted core beautifully diffuses the light, removing all glare and transforming a heavy glass block into a weightless, ethereal orb of ambient warmth.
Because these heavy glass halves sit directly on top of one another, very few examples have survived the last six decades without significant chipping, scratching, or structural bruising.
