A remarkable 18th-century carved oak pedestal, richly decorated with deep floral and foliate carvings and hand-painted heraldic shields. The cylindrical body is constructed from solid oak and features elaborate hand-carved ornamentation running around the entire piece. Particularly striking are the two painted coats of arms, incorporated into the carving and giving the pedestal a distinctive historical and heraldic character. The substantial moulded base and rounded upper edge give the piece a strong architectural presence. The top shows considerable traces of age and use, while the oak has developed a beautiful deep brown patina over the centuries. Originally likely produced as an architectural, ecclesiastical or ceremonial furnishing, today it works exceptionally well as a sculptural pedestal, plant stand, display column or standalone decorative object.
