Product description
The cage of Sidi Bou Said is a birdcage with an incomparable design that all Tunisians know. It's origin dates back to the end of the 19th century when the grandfather of Azouz Samouda, who ran an iron forge in the medina (the old walled city section of Tunis) had an idea for a decorative birdcage and created his first one in 1850. For 50+ years Azouz made cages, just as his father and grandfather did. The birdcage, made from olive wood and wire, has become the emblem of the mythical white and blue village. I acquired this beauty from the original shop while in Tunisia in the late 1980s. It is in excellent condition, for it was used strictly for décor by me. There is a door on one side of the cage which can swing open and is kept in place via a latch hook (see photo 5). This allows you to easily slide your hand in and out for easy cleaning; should you choose to use it for its intended purpose of keeping a bird. From farmhouse to coastal and anything in between, this beauty will add a dose of charm to any space!
