Sabzewar, formerly Beihagh, is the capital of Sabzewar administrative district in Razavi-Khorasan Province, with a population of over 243,000. The city is located about 220 kilometers west of the provincial capital Mashhad in northeastern Iran, where the carpets are knotted in the old tradition.
These carpets are knotted in Mashad, an area in northeastern Persia. The pattern is often of the medallion type in dark shades of blue, red, and blue, and the wool of the carpet is very soft. The Mashad rugs are often reminiscent of some of the Keshan rugs.
