He was the son of Julius August Kalmar, the founder of the eponymous brand specializing in chandeliers and other bronze objects. Julius Theodor Kalmar acquired extensive design expertise during his formative years. He studied at the Birmingham School of Art and Vienna’s University of Applied Arts under the tutelage of the Vienna Secession architect Josef Hoffmann (1870–1956). J.T. In the 1930s, Julius Theodor Kalmar began collaborating with the Austrian Werkbund, an association founded by architects, manufacturers, and artisans united by the principles of modernist design. For the Werkbund, Julius Theodor Kalmar created a series of glass chandeliers and fixtures that showcase meticulous construction and craftsmanship.
