Product description
Floor lamp model 'Pelikan' No. 2097 by J.T. Kalmar, Vienna Austria. Black lacquered cast base and stem with brass details. The taupe shade on the brass arm is adjustable in six positions. Wear consistent with age and use, minor scratches and lost of paint but overall in a beautiful condition. Some discoloration on the shade (see pictures).
Dimensions: height stand 59.8 inches (152 cm), diameter shade 20.0 in. (51 cm), height shade 9.0 in. (23 cm). Diameter base: 9.3 in. (23,5 cm). Length arm: 26.0 in. (66 cm).
The electricity is used but in a really good condition, approved to European standards and as with all vintage electrical you must have it tested before use. New switch. One bulb (E27 26-27 mm (medium) Edison screw (ES). Max. 70 Watt. Works in the US.
Just like the Dornstab, the Pelikan (Model 2097) is adjustable. The shade can be hung on the stem at six different heights in order to create an ideal reading lamp for everyone.
J.T. Kalmar is - just like Bakalowits and Lobmeyr, for example - one of the renowned Viennese lighting manufacturers whose history dates back well into the 19th century. The company was founded in 1881 by Julius August Kalmar. Initially the company specialized in bronze objects and chandeliers in an eclectic style, which were very successful at the major international exhibitions of the time. Shortly after the turn of the century, Julius Theodor Kalmar, the founder's son, joined the firm. Julius Theodor, who had studied under Josef Hoffmann at the Vienna School of Applied Arts, shifted the stylistic course of the company in a more modern direction. Kalmar became associated with The Austrian Werkbund in 1925 and in the following years executed designs by various well-known architects belonging to this avant-garde organization, such as Josef Frank, Oskar Wlach, Oskar Strnad, Oswald Haerdtl and Clemens Holzmeister. From around 1950, Kalmar put more emphasis on producing its own designs. Lamps such as the Dornstab, the Hase and the Pelikan (Pelican) also date from this period. These models have not only become the Kalmar classics, but are also examples of the elegant, moderate Modernism which is also typical of other Austrian designers such as: Carl Auböck, Rupert Nikoll and Franz Hagenauer.
