For the Olympic Games Los Angeles 1984, David Hockney created this composition of a swimmer in rippling water from a montage of 12 polaroids. Hockney is recognized as an abstract or pop artist. His poster is representative of his photographic experiments in the 1980s, when he began to incorporate Polaroids into his work. First used as studies for his paintings, he then used them as art, organizing several images into larger composite works, as he does in his poster. Hockney's poster also recalls his early California-inspired acrylics of swimming pools.
