Decorated antique piece of hungarian black pottery.
Handmade black ceramic art pottery water jug (botijo) from Hungary.
The utilitarian vessel features a wide belly, handle and spout from witch to drink, and is a traditional porous clay pot originally used for carrying water. Due to their porosity, the jugs are well-known for their ability to keep water very cool.
The answer to the question of what makes black ceramics black is: from real reductive or reduction firing. In the second half of the firing, when the objects are already glowing, all the openings of the kiln are closed, so the smoke and soot react with the clay and pass through it, which gives the black color.
