Loes Veenstra began knitting wool sweaters in 1955 and has never stopped since. To keep her hands busy, she created literally hundreds of sweaters in all sorts of distinctive colours, patterns, styles and sizes – all of which are photographed and included here. Never worn, the collection has now been taken up as a pilot project by Christien Meindertsma, a Dutch designer and artist whose work explores the life of products and raw materials, with the aim of regaining understanding of processes made unfamiliar or obsolete by industrialisation. The sweaters are part of a larger project, ‘DNA Charlois’, which involves materials and crafts by people from 160 different countries.
