A powerful kakejiku 掛け軸 (hanging scroll) by Ôshima Shôkyû 大島祥丘 (1907–1996) depicting a dragon 竜 (ryû) emerging from the clouds.
Rendered in a bold and dynamic sumi-e 墨絵 (ink painting) style, the composition focuses on the dragon’s expressive head as it descends through swirling mist. Its long flowing whiskers and mane trail dramatically behind, while one three-clawed paw reaches forward from the clouds.
Signed and sealed in the lower right corner: Shôkyû 祥丘.
Ôshima Shôkyû 大島祥丘 (1907–1996) was a Japanese painter born in Izumo City 出雲市, Shimane Prefecture 島根県. He studied at the Kyôto Municipal College of Painting 京都市立絵画専門学校 and later became a pupil of Dômoto Inshô 堂本印象, one of the leading painters of modern Kyoto. Settling in Fukuyama 福山, Hiroshima Prefecture 広島県, he exhibited regularly at the Nitten 日展 and became known for his refined depictions of flowers, birds, fruits, and seasonal subjects. Alongside his painting career, Ôshima devoted considerable effort to art education, producing instructional publications and teaching younger generations of artists. His work reflects the elegant naturalism and decorative sensibility associated with the Kyoto nihonga tradition.
Complete with a dated, signed, and sealed wooden tomobako 共箱 (storage box), inscribed: Shôwa 51 昭和五十一年 (1976).
Executed in ink on paper, mounted as a hanging scroll with patterned silk brocade borders and fitted with white bone jikusaki 軸先 (roller ends).

Considering its age, the scroll is in good condition, with wear consistent with age, including some light foxing and minor losses to the lower section of the mounting. Please refer to the photographs for a clear condition reference.
