Kitagawa Utamaro is one of the most important ukiyo-e artists of Edo Era in Japan. He was known for his Bijin-Ga woodblock prints artworks, which later inspired French Impressionism, many artists like Van Gogh studied Edo Era Japanese artist's artwork like Utamaro's.
His print images depict classic and elegant Japanese geisha and female characters, from mothers to children. He is also well known for his nature subjects and erotic Sunga images, as most Japanese masters of the era would do. Utamaro produced a few thousand prints in his lifetime, making him a truly dedicated and prolific artist in Japanese art history.
Utamaro’s works are collected by the British Museum, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago and Boston MFA in the U.S.A.
Most recent examples of his prints have realised over £700,000 at auction houses worldwide ( in 2016, his print made a world record for ukiyo-e Japanese Woodblock print auction record).
