Rosenthal Studio-Line – “Künstler-Sammeldose” by Barbara Brenner (Nr. 1)
Germany, late 1980s
Porcelain, glossy finish
Dimensions: approx. 17 × 9.5 × 9.5 cm
Signed, marked on base
A striking postmodern collectible box by Barbara Brenner for Rosenthal Studio-Line, part of the celebrated Künstler-Sammeldosen ("Artist Collection Boxes") series. This vibrant lidded piece—Nr. 1 in the series—brings together geometry, whimsy, and the bold colors of 1980s Memphis-inspired design. The pointed lid, graphic contrasts, and pop-art patterns make this a functional artwork and statement piece in one.
The design references the architecture of fantasy and comic books, executed in Rosenthal's finest hard-paste porcelain with glossy finish and vivid enamels. Highly collectible and rarely offered with such crisp colors and intact signature.
About the Artist:
Barbara Brenner (b. 1949) is a German artist and illustrator known for her playful, expressive designs that merge figuration with bold abstraction. Her collaboration with Rosenthal in the 1980s marked a high point in artist-designed tableware. Her work evokes a uniquely Central European aesthetic—part Bauhaus, part cartoon rebellion.
About the Manufacturer:
Founded in 1879, *Rosenthal* is one of Germany’s premier porcelain manufacturers. Its *Studio-Line*—launched in the 1960s under the direction of Raymond Loewy and later expanded by figures like Tapio Wirkkala and Walter Gropius—sought to merge industrial design with fine art. The Künstler-Sammeldosen, produced in the late 1980s and 1990s, showcased works by contemporary visual artists, making each box a mini architectural sculpture.
Condition: Excellent. Minimal shelf wear. No chips, cracks, or repairs.
