Mid-Century Swedish Teak (or Walnut) Roll-Top Bureau by Egon Østergaard for AB Bröderna Gustafssons 1960
Bring a timeless Scandinavian character into your home with this elegant roll-top secretary desk. It features a beautifully veneered roll-top lid that glides back to reveal pigeonholes, small drawers and a pull-out writing surface — a smart, compact workstation. Below are three generous full-width drawers, making this piece both practical and refined. Its slender, tapered legs and clean lines epitomize the minimalist elegance of mid-century design.
Whether used as a writing desk, home office bureau, bar cabinet or storage console, this Swedish piece adds warmth, function, and vintage charm — perfect for modern or retro-inspired interiors.
Bröderna Gustafssons & Egon Østergaard
AB Bröderna Gustafssons (sometimes labeled just “Bröderna Gustafssons”) was a Swedish furniture manufacturer active in the mid-20th century. Their work is emblematic of the Scandinavian mid-century modern style: veneered wood (teak, walnut, rosewood), functional design, and refined proportions.
Many pieces from this maker — including roll-top desks, bureaux, cabinets and sideboards — date from the 1950s through the 1960s.
Egon Østergaard is commonly credited as designer of a number of roll-top desks and secretary bureaux produced for Bröderna Gustafssons (or under the umbrella of Swedish furniture industry makers such as Svensk Möbelindustri / SMI).
Østergaard’s designs stand out for their combination of functionality and elegance: smooth tambour (roll-top) mechanisms, clever storage — pigeonholes, small drawers, pull-out writing surfaces — and overall clean, minimalist Scandinavian lines.
Because of these qualities, desks and bureaux bearing the Gustafssons / Egon Østergaard lineage are now considered collectible mid-century Scandinavian design pieces, with both practical use and decorative vintage.
