Richard Uhlemeyer Sculptural Studio Ceramic Vase – Rare Organic Form with Crystalline Metallic Glaze, Germany, 1970s
An exceptional studio ceramic vase by German ceramic artist Richard Uhlemeyer, distinguished by a highly unusual sculptural silhouette and a remarkable metallic crater glaze that transforms the vessel into an object of almost geological character.
The softly swelling body rises from a rounded base before narrowing towards an elegantly folded four-point opening. This distinctive mouth creates a subtle star-shaped aperture, introducing movement and tension into an otherwise harmonious form. The silhouette appears different from every angle, revealing Uhlemeyer's sensitivity to both sculptural volume and functional vessel design.
Particularly striking is the glaze. Rich bronze, copper, ochre, ivory, and deep umber tones merge across the surface in a complex network of crystalline and volcanic effects. Areas of metallic gold shimmer emerge from darker passages, creating the impression of oxidised minerals, weathered rock formations, or molten earth frozen in time. The glossy surface continuously changes under shifting light, revealing new depths and tonal variations.
Richard Uhlemeyer is regarded as one of Germany's notable post-war studio ceramicists, recognised for his mastery of glaze chemistry and his ability to balance sculptural form with technical experimentation. His finest works occupy the intersection between vessel and sculpture, where the ceramic surface becomes an artistic medium in its own right.
This example stands out not only for its rare folded form but also for the exceptional quality of its glaze, making it a particularly desirable piece for collectors of German Studiokeramik.

Richard Uhlemeyer's work belongs to the rich tradition of German Künstlerkeramik, where technical innovation and artistic expression are inseparable. While many ceramic artists concentrated either on form or decoration, Uhlemeyer developed a distinctive visual language in which glaze and structure interact as equal partners. His vessels often appear simultaneously natural and architectural, recalling geological formations, eroded landscapes, or abstract sculptural studies.
The present vase exemplifies these qualities particularly well. Its folded star-like opening introduces an element of controlled asymmetry, while the extraordinary glaze creates a surface of remarkable visual complexity. As a result, the piece functions equally well as a vessel, a decorative object, or a standalone ceramic sculpture.
Its earthy palette and luminous metallic effects make it especially suitable for contemporary interiors, organic modern settings, wabi-sabi environments, and collections focused on post-war European studio ceramics.
