We present this bust of a young lady, crafted from white marble, likely from Carrara. The sculpture dates back to the mid-19th century. It rests on a square base and a circular pedestal, also made of marble.
This fantastic sculpture is unsigned, but its artistic quality is attributable to a sculptor who perfectly mastered sculptural techniques. The depiction of the woman is very severe, intended to convey rigor and seriousness, all characteristics that married women must have possessed during that historical period. The woman wears a cap typically worn by married bourgeois women in the mid-19th century. She likely wears a cape with a bonnet at the back and a large bow at the front.
The sculptor perfectly captures the angular, rigid features of the face, which contrast with the soft lines of the clothing. Notice the perfection of the finely sculpted folds of the hood, which flow down the back and perfectly convey the sense of lightness of the fabric.
Although the sculpture has undergone restoration, likely due to a fall, this does not compromise its pleasing artistic quality, overall aesthetics, or stability. We recommend examining all the photos in detail and noting the two restorations on the neck and base.
